SEBI Halts Gold FoFs & Bullion Dips 2%: The Smart Dhanteras 2026 Buying Playbook
With Dhanteras and Diwali arriving in less than a week, millions of Indian households are preparing for their annual purchase of precious metals.
However, investors navigating mutual fund apps on Friday, October 16, were met with an unexpected shock: several leading Indian Asset Management Companies (AMCs) abruptly stopped accepting fresh lump-sum and SIP investments into their Gold Fund of Funds (FoFs).
The sudden freeze stems from verbal directives and regulatory investment limits imposed by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) regarding underlying commodity and overseas investment thresholds.
Simultaneously, the bullion market delivered a rare tactical gift: after touching historic highs above ₹1,51,400 earlier this month, domestic MCX Gold cooled by 2.01% week-on-week to ₹1,46,426 per 10 grams, while Silver dropped 4.61% to ₹2,10,918 per kilogram.
If your goal is to buy gold this festive season without paying exorbitant jewellery showroom making charges or getting blocked by mutual fund restrictions, you need a clear game plan.
In this playbook, we break down why Gold FoFs were paused, explain the crucial difference between Gold FoFs and Gold ETFs, and show you how to buy pure digital bullion at spot prices ahead of Dhanteras.
Why Did SEBI Halt Gold Fund of Funds (FoFs)?
To understand why your mutual fund app may have blocked your Gold SIP, you must understand how a Fund of Funds (FoF) works:
- Direct Gold ETF: A scheme that buys physical 99.5% pure gold bullion directly, stores it in domestic custodian vaults, and lists its units on the NSE and BSE stock exchanges.
- Gold Fund of Funds (FoF): A mutual fund designed for investors who do not have a Demat account. The FoF collects money from retail investors and uses it to purchase units of an underlying domestic Gold ETF or international commodity fund.
The Regulatory Trigger
Under SEBI regulations, mutual funds face strict portfolio exposure caps regarding overseas investments and single-asset concentration. Because certain Gold FoFs channel capital into international gold exchange-traded products or reached internal scheme prudential exposure limits, AMCs were instructed by SEBI to temporarily halt fresh inflows until revised regulatory frameworks or increased overseas investment limits are formally notified by the RBI and government.
Crucial Distinction: Direct Gold ETFs trading on the stock exchange are NOT banned. Only the mutual fund wrapper (the FoF) that feeds into them without a Demat account has temporarily restricted fresh subscriptions.
The Dhanteras Price Breather: Why Gold Dropped 2%
Earlier in October, domestic gold hit an all-time peak above ₹1,51,400 per 10 grams amid intense Middle Eastern geopolitical tensions.
During the week of October 12–18, however, precious metals experienced a healthy pullback:
- MCX Gold: Dropped from ₹1,49,430 to ₹1,46,426 per 10g (-2.01% WoW).
- MCX Silver: Pulled back from ₹2,21,110 to ₹2,10,918 per kg (-4.61% WoW).
This correction was driven by short-term profit taking on international commodity exchanges ($4,195/oz spot levels) and relief rallies in global equity markets. For Indian buyers waiting on the sidelines, this pre-festive dip offers a savings of approximately ₹5,000 per 10 grams of gold compared to peak quotes just ten days ago.
The Dhanteras 2026 Buying Guide: 3 Smarter Ways to Invest
If you cannot invest through a traditional Gold Mutual Fund this week, here is how you should execute your festive bullion allocation:
1. Buy Direct Gold ETFs via Your Demat Account
If you have a stockbroking or Demat account (such as Zerodha, Groww, AngelOne, ICICI Direct, or HDFC Sky), you do not need a Gold FoF.
- Search for any liquid, low-cost Gold ETF (e.g., Nippon India Gold ETF, HDFC Gold ETF, ICICI Prudential Gold ETF, SBI Gold ETF).
- Place a market order during stock exchange trading hours (9:15 AM to 3:30 PM on weekdays).
- The Benefits: Zero making charges, zero storage risk, minimal annual expense ratio (0.25%–0.40%), and pure spot pricing linked directly to physical bullion.
2. Look at Silver ETFs for Higher Industrial Upside
Silver’s sharper 4.61% weekly drop to ₹2,10,918 per kg presents a compelling tactical entry point. Because more than half of global silver is consumed in high-growth industrial applications (solar photovoltaic cells, electric vehicles, 5G electronics, and semiconductor manufacturing), silver acts as a high-beta growth companion to gold. A balanced 70% Gold ETF and 30% Silver ETF allocation captures both defensive stability and industrial upside.
3. Screen Secondary-Market Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs)
For investors with a multi-year horizon (3 to 6 years), check the NSE and BSE bond books for existing Sovereign Gold Bond tranches expiring between 2028 and 2032.
- Many tranches trade on the exchange at slight discounts to spot gold prices.
- SGBs pay a guaranteed 2.50% annual coupon interest semi-annually into your bank account.
- If held until the official RBI maturity date, redemption capital gains are 100% tax-free.
What to Avoid This Dhanteras
1. Paying 15%–25% Making Charges on Jewellery as an ‘Investment’
If you buy jewellery for personal adornment and cultural joy, do so with pleasure. But do not deceive yourself into believing it is a financial investment. Between making charges, 3% GST, and melting losses, jewellery purchases lose 20%+ of their value the moment you leave the showroom.
2. Buying Unregulated ‘Digital Gold’ on Payment Apps
Fintech payment apps heavily advertise “Digital Gold starting at ₹1”. However:
- Digital gold platforms are not directly regulated by SEBI or the RBI.
- These platforms charge a steep 3% to 6% spread between their buying and selling prices, plus a non-recoverable 3% GST. Selling digital gold back to the platform incurs severe immediate losses compared to exchange-traded Gold ETFs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will mutual fund houses reopen Gold FoFs soon?
Yes. AMCs are working with SEBI and AMFI to rebalance underlying holdings or adjust operational structures. Subscriptions are expected to resume once updated regulatory notifications are issued.
Do I need to sell my existing Gold FoF units?
No. Existing SIP units and past investments in Gold FoFs remain completely safe, active, and continue to reflect the daily NAV based on live gold prices. The current restriction applies solely to fresh inflows.
Can I buy Gold ETFs on Dhanteras day even if markets are closed?
Stock exchanges in India (NSE and BSE) traditionally conduct a special extended trading session for Gold and Silver ETFs on Dhanteras evening (typically from 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM) to allow investors to purchase auspicious bullion digitally during Muhurat hours.
